Most farmers in Ndhiwa and the wider Homa Bay region work small plots with limited access to quality seed, fertilizer, and reliable agronomic advice — meaning yields stay low even when the effort put in is high.
Without direct market linkages, produce often moves through several middlemen before reaching a real buyer, and each step erodes the price a farmer actually receives — turning a good harvest into a disappointing payday.
Add in unpredictable weather and no structured way for women's and youth groups to participate in the value chain beyond planting and harvesting, and the result is an agricultural sector that produces plenty but captures very little of the value it creates.
